I am often complimented on the smoothness of my face and at how youthful I look. Let me tell you that after 4 kids, that feels pretty good. So, what's my secret?

Avoid makeup at all costs.

I know what you're thinking. "What about my blemishes?" "What about my freckles?" "How can I cover up my uneven tones?"

My answer to all those questions is simply "Don't you dare!"

The more makeup and products you use to cover up your so-called beauty flaws is most likely doing you more harm than good. Instead of covering up, work on healing the ones that are a real issue and embracing the ones that are naturally you.

Freckles become beauty marks. Uneven skin tones can be healed by applying things like shea butter and cocoa butter, which are very good for the skin overall.

To rid acne, wash the face with a mild soap, like Dove Sensitive Skin . Pat dry and apply diluted tea tree oil. I like a mix with a base of olive oil (about 2 ounces) and 10 drops of pure tea tree oil. Do this twice per day to clear up the acne. This has been my regimen since I first broke out with acne badly. It rid me of the issue and as long as I keep with that regimen daily, it keeps the acne away. Tea tree oil and olive oil is good for the skin in general.

Instead of using things that work against your beauty or cover up your natural beauty, go with natural products that maintain and enhance it.

Don't cover it up! Refresh it!

This is really a great article, but for those of us who really can't go without makeup there is another option. If you are looking for safe skin & body products, Ava Anderson Non-toxic is a company that is based on producing products without harmful ingredients. They can be found on the cosmetics database showing a score of only 0 - 1. Check out our website at www.avaandersonnontoxic/kathleenforava. While some "natural" brands have safe & unsafe products in their line, what I like about Ava Anderson is that all their products are safe to use. If you're interested in switching over to non-toxic products, you can email me at kathleenforava@gmail.com for more info. Thanks, Kathleen

I never wear makeup. Mostly because I hate how it feels on my face and because I've never really learned to wear it in the first place.

A question: I have oily skin, and would feel a little nervous about using Tea tree oil or olive oil on my face. Are there any other products I could use?

I love freckles and wish I had some! Dove soap (the regular white bar since my skin isn't sensitive) is terrific--it's all I've used on my face since I was a kid and my skin is happy for it. I do like make-up, but a little goes a long way. I've never been fond of a too-made-up look.

I love my freckles! I rarely wear makeup; partly because it gets so darn hot in TX it melts off your face. I do for special occasions and for photos but not on a regular basis. I love your advice here!

I personally don't wear make up, but only because I hate the way it feels. I do wear it sometimes when my daughter tells me I'm all grown up now and can. lol

In my years working for The Dermatologist I would have to disagree with your thought it's not good for you. Some is actually quite good. And wearing good make up is in fact better for your skin, then not wearing any.

And sometimes...some of us just have good skin, and sadly others don't and often it really doesn't matter what you do. You can't really change good genes or Mother Nature.

I don't wear makeup too often, but I do love it. It's fun to play dress-up and makes going out feel more special for me. I'm not so much into heavy foundation, powder and mascara. More into eyeshadow and lipstick/stains. Drawn to the colors, I guess.

I wear a touch of make up every day because it enhances my looks. I especially like the way eye make up and mascara accentuates my eyes. Those of you who don't wear it, I have to ask, how old are you? If you are young, you might be able to get away without make up, but those of us who have lived a few years look a lot better with it. In fact, I worked with a lady who used to come to work without her make up on whenever she wanted a day off. People would ask her if she was sick and insist she go home. Make up can be a woman's best friend or worst enemy depending on how tastefully she applies it. And as for those with oily skin, a dab of powder does wonders!
