Grovetender Druids is a cool looking Elf Druid Ally creature that can make 1/1 Plant tokens each time you have an Ally enter play for the low cost of 1 colorless mana. As a 3/3 for 2WG it definitely seems viable for an Ally strategy in Limited. However, design-wise, this feels like a weaker Wirewood Hivemaster - which made 1/1 Insects each time you played a non-token Elf - or Turntimber Ranger - which made 2/2 Wolf tokens each time an Ally entered play. This seems like a blend of the two.
The Druids have a nice synergy with Avenger of Zendikar in Commander, with the fact that creates Plant tokens that are powered up by the Avenger’s Landfall ability. But in most token happy Commander decks that might want this, it doesn’t really work due to the narrow nature of the trigger. Also, being four mana, the Collected Company players that may have wanted this in their deck aren’t going to play it. It doesn’t even really synergize all that well with the other Allies, although Veteran Warleader is happy with the extra creatures to power him up.
This is a flavorful creature, but I’m not sure that it has the legs to make it in Constructed. That being said, it’s only an uncommon so it probably does the job in Limited as long as Allies are a viable archetype.
