A TON were reached today, so we’ll lump some of them together as they’re related.
This Enchantment really only sees play in one Commander deck: Zur, the Enchanter. It’s not super exciting, but with the growth of Bant Enchantress in Commander (Ragnar appears to be leading the way in that category) this shouldn’t go too much lower
Armageddon - Portal $6.02
This rare printing of Armageddon is following the same trend as all Armageddons, down. With land destruction greatly frowned upon in today’s game, especially in Commander. But being such a rare printing, if you happen to like running Armageddon, it’s fine to keep.
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - Modern Masters $16.48
Being reprinted in Modern Masters 2015 really killed this guy’s value. He’s still as good as ever, though, and with the 2015 version currently hovering around $10, that would be the one I’d be picking up.
Verdict: HOLD MM1 version, BUY MM2015 version
Mana Confluence - Journey into Nyx $8.40
The strictly better version of City of Brass sees tons of Standard play. It’s a good land, but after its Standard rotation, it will probably only see Commander play and only fringy Constructed play. It’s only maintaining this price due to demand. It will probably plummet not long before October comes and Theros block goes.
Verdict: SELL if you’re not using them
Containment Priest - Commander 2014 $12.47
This gal is really good in Legacy and Commander. I’m not sure what the floor for this card is, but it’s probably a good long term investment. Considering you can get copies well below $12 ($8-9 even in near mint, shipping included) I like this card as a pick-up.
Garruk, Caller of Beasts - Magic 2014 (M14) $5.37
While he doesn’t see much in the way of Modern play, he’s pretty much a Green staple in Commander. His ability to draw a bunch of creatures as a plus is very relevant, and playing any green creature card in your hand for his -3 is really strong. His ultimate is extremely relevant in creature-based decks, as well, getting you a free summon from your deck any time you cast a creature spell - that creature doesn’t even have to be green. This is NOT a $5 planeswalker. I’m not sure what his ceiling is, but if Nissa can be $13, he can at least be $10. I love this guy.
Council's Judgment - Conspiracy $7.95
Like Containment Priest, Council’s Judgment is a strong Legacy and Commander card. It’s been declining a bit more slowly than the Priest, so I think it’s pretty much hit its floor. With copies easily had for $7, this is a good time to buy in.
Stifle - Scourge $7.93
Being reprinted in Conspiracy really killed Stifle’s value. The good news is that it’s pretty much reached its floor. The Conspiracy version already bottomed out at $5 and the Scourge version seems to be settled at $8. It’s not like Stifle sees incredible amounts of play anymore. That being said, if you need them, this is a good time to get them. I don’t see major growth coming anytime soon though.
Palladia-Mors - Legends $7.48
Typically, you don’t see Legends cards bottoming out. But Palladia-Mors is a Legend that was reprinted in white-bordered Chronicles, so it’s not like he was an incredibly sought after collectible. He is, however, a playable Commander, so if Naya Dragons are your thing, he’s fine to get.
B.F.M. (Big Furry Monster Right) - Unglued $5.44
One of the iconic cards of Unglued, the right half has always been a bit more than the left half, which is odd. There’s just not a lot of demand for this guy anymore. But as a two-card “combo” he’s pretty funny for casual play.
Brimaz, King of Oreskos - Born of the Gods $9.93
Being Modern and Legacy playable makes Brimaz awesome. He’s also really good in Commander. I’ve felt for awhile that $10 is his floor. But because the demand for him isn’t outrageous at the moment, I don’t think speculating on him is quite the best plan just yet. He’s a guy that’s just good enough that he should tick up over time. He may drop a couple dollars at rotation, but I’m not sure people will really unload him - he’s too good in Eternal White Weenie decks and in Commander to just dump.
Verdict: HOLD, but buy if you want him.
Creakwood Liege - Eventide $6.95
This Liege has been Commander playable for a long time. He’s actually a very strong card in a lot of black/green decks, especially Savra, Queen of the Golgari and Sapling of Colfenor. However, the Modern Masters 2015 version is only $2. So if you want this guy, I’d ditch this version and grab the reprint which you can realistically get for $1.50. One exception is the foils, which seem to be holding steady at $16 from Eventide and $8 from MM2015.
Verdict: SELL Eventide non-foils, HOLD MM2015 non-foil and foils. The Eventide foils probably aren’t moving, but the $8 MM2015 foil is fine to replace it in a deck.
Misdirection - Mercadian Masques $6.67
Another card that was reprinted in Conspiracy, this one sees a ton of Commander play. The Conspiracy version bottomed out at $2.50. On the other hand, the Mercadian Masques foils are over $100 and have remained pretty steady. Personally, I’d invest in the Conspiracy versions, which are $20 for foils. It’s not like Conspiracy foils will get any cheaper. I think that the Masques non-foil will keep declining honestly.
Verdict: SELL Mercadian Masques non-foils, HOLD Masques foils, HOLD Conspiracy non-foils and foils
Pixie Queen - Legends $5.28
Pixie Queen is really not played at all anymore, even in Commander, as there are other cards that give flying that are much more efficient. Her art is beautiful, though, and she is on the Reserved List, so if you want her, now’s not a bad time to get her. She’s probably never going to go anywhere price-wise, though.
Remand - Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska $8.47 & Remand - Modern Masters 2015 $6.27
The reprinting of Remand in the Duel Deck originally brought down the price of the Ravnica counter-spell quite a bit. Modern Masters 2015 reprinting it is still bringing down the price. The Modern Masters version has probably bottomed out around $6, and as this is played pretty much everywhere in Modern, but also in Commander, it probably will never drop below $5. The alt-art Duel Deck versions seem to be pretty popular, too. I think they’re pretty close to their floor. This card is just that good.
Wildcall - Ugin's Fate Promos $6.67
I feel like this card is pretty overpriced. It’s basically draw a card for GG. It’s hardly bad, and does see some limited play in Commander. But I don’t ever see this being incredibly good in Constructed. The promo art is pretty cool, though. It will probably settle around $4-5 for awhile, but I just don’t see this having much long time potential.
Verdict: SELL, but it’s not urgent
Now a dozen-plus MM2015 cards hitting their lows…
All Is Dust - Modern Masters 2015 $5.12
The Rise of the Eldrazi version is at $11 and dropping. But there’s enough casual demand for this card that it should stay above $5.
Verdict: HOLD the MM2015, SELL ROE versions
Bitterblossom - Modern Masters 2015 $25.95
A super sweet card that used to be banned in Modern, but since its reprint has seen quite a dip in value. $25 seems to be the floor, so now’s a good time to buy in.
Verdict: BUY MM15, HOLD Morningtide
Blinkmoth Nexus - Modern Masters 2015 $5.69
The other two printings are still $9-10 and this one is lagging behind. It’s so good in Affinity.
Verdict: BUY MM15, hold other printings
Cryptic Command - Modern Masters 2015 $30.43
$30 should be the floor for this Modern staple counterspell. Considering it was once pushing $60, this is a good time to buy in.
Verdict: BUY MM15, hold Lorwyn, sell MM1
Dark Confidant - Modern Masters 2015 $41.36
Another printing of Dark Confidant has helped bring down this card from a high of $85-90 to a much more affordable $40-50. The MM and Ravnica printings seem to be holding steady ,but the MM15 printings are still dropping. Not quite sure if the time is to buy in yet.
Daybreak Coronet - Modern Masters 2015 $7.21
The Bogles staple has seen better days price-wise. The original Future Sight printing was $35 at its peak. MM2015 copies can be had for about $6 a piece. It probably hasn’t quite hit its floor just yet, but it should stabilize soon. Future Sight copies are at $13 and falling. Seeing this settle around $10-15 in the future is realistic
Verdict: HOLD MM15, sell Future Sight
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite - Modern Masters 2015 $14.00
$14 seems to be a floor for this Modern, Legacy, and Vintage playable. She’s also really popular in Commander. New Phyrexia copies are still $20, but are still trending down. Still, I like the long-term of this card.
Verdict: BUY MM15, hold New Phyrexia
Iona, Shield of Emeria - Modern Masters 2015 $10.82
Getting a third printing in FTV: Angels is definitely going to affect Iona. The Zendikar versions are plumetting, but $10 seems a reasonable floor for this Modern playable. She sees a ton of play in Commander, too.
Verdict: Hold MM15, Sell Zendikar
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth - Modern Masters 2015 $19.99
Kozilek’s floor appears to be $20. The original printings are at $35 and falling. If you need Kozilek, this is probably not a bad time to getting your copy.
Verdict: HOLD MM15, Sell ROE
Leyline of Sanctity - Modern Masters 2015 $11.18
I feel that $10 is the floor for this highly playable Modern sideboard card. The original printing from Magic 2011 is down to $13 TCG MID, but you can grab LP and NM copies for $9 (incl. shipping). If you need your playset, now seems like a good time.
Verdict: BUY MM15, Hold M11
Primeval Titan - Modern Masters 2015 $10.94
“Prime Time” has had an all-time floor of $7 with its previous core set printings. I think that $10 is a reasonable floor for a Modern playable that is the heart of a few archetypes. I don’t think its price will explode any time soon though.
Splinter Twin - Modern Masters 2015 $14.24
The heart of an archetype - that I despise. That being said, I don’t see any major movement happening at the moment.
Tezzeret the Seeker - Modern Masters 2015 $6.35
I think Tezzeret has a bit more to drop, as copies can be had for $5.50 right now. His Duel Deck printings have taken a dive lately, and the Shards of Alara copies are falling too. He’s good in Legacy, but there probably isn’t enough demand to outstrip supply.
Verdict: HOLD, but you can sell extra copies
Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre - Modern Masters 2015 $17.27
MM2015 copies can be had for roughly $15. I’m confident in this being the absolute floor.
Wilt-Leaf Liege - Modern Masters 2015 $6.45
The Liege has shown promise in Modern, but until it tops, I think it’s safe to just hold for now.
Archangel of Tithes Magic Origins $9.65
Of the four Magic Origins cards on this list, the Archangel is probably the best chance to be a good hold.
Kytheon, Hero of Akros Magic Origins $10.32
These have been selling out with a lot of vendors. Troll and Toad and Star City Games have been pretty aggressive in buying them. He’s definitely good enough - he just needs a spot to fit in with Standard.
Verdict: HOLD and watch
Goblin Piledriver Magic Origins $6.99
There’s enough demand to keep this from tanking, but being printed in a massively opened Core Set makes this is a sell if you don’t need it.
Verdict: SELL - it should drop below $5 easily.
Day's Undoing Magic Origins $9.30
The mid price of about $9 is not realistic. Copies are selling around $6-7. This card is fun, and there could be a way to break it, but until that happens…
Overall, the Magic card market is extremely healthy, with plenty of good strong targets to hold onto. Modern Masters 2015 hasn’t quite hit its floor for everything, but if you don’t want to wait, it’s perfectly fine to buy in now.
Any cards that you disagree with these verdicts? Any cards that have bottomed out that you’d recommend to buy or cards you feel are definitely sells?
