However, many of the mythics in Dragon’s Maze have a lot of casual appeal. Ral Zarek is a planeswalker that never really took off in Standard but is an absolute powerhouse in Commander. Even he is only around $7-8, making him perhaps the best buy in the set by far.
No other mythic in the set breaks $5. But several of them are casual hits. Master of Cruelties is a potential win condition in some Commander decks, being a staple alongside such commanders as Kaalia of the Vast, Mogis, God of Slaughter, and Olivia Voldaren. Also, having a power of only 1 makes him very good with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death.
He doesn’t buylist as well as some of the other mythics in the set, but it’s hard not to see his price have a decent organic growth. A future price of $10 isn’t out of the question. Foils are already around $10, so there’s definitely long-term hold potential here. He’s one of those guys you find a Commander deck for, leave him in there and forget about him.
Savageborn Hydra is only $2, mostly because it’s not one of the best Hydras out there. Mythic rare Hydras usually aren’t $2, but even having double strike, he doesn’t have trample, which hurts him a lot. Foils are only $6 and while he’s not quite a bulk mythic, he’s close. I’m not bullish on this card, and while it’s not a terrible buy, there are better targets to chase. It’s a card that could get reprinted down the line as it’s fairly generic.
Maze’s End had its day in Standard, but has never really taken off in Modern. I wouldn’t strongly consider buying these simply because there’s about a billion promotional copies on the market. Set foils are about $3-4, but I don’t know about them ever seeing much growth unless some speculators decide to go buy all of them out.
Wear // Tear sees tons of Modern play, as it’s a way to deal with Enchantments and Artifacts on one card. The non-foil buylists for more than every rare in the set except for the Notion Thief. Foils are a great long-term investment, already around $9. Interestingly enough, Turn // Burn, which was a crazy good card in Standard, hasn’t really taken off in Modern. With how good Delver is getting in that format, though, don’t be surprised if the foils go from $1 to several dollars very quickly.
One last card I’d like to mention are the non-foil and foil versions of Render Silent. They’re both below a dollar, and it’s such a commonly used counterspell in Commander that I can’t see it staying that low. The foils are so close in price to the non-foil versions right now that foils are a great place to be. Counterspell + Silence is just a really good card. But there is a Buy-a-Box promo, too, which may be part of the reason the price is being kept down. Still, all versions are a great investment.
Turns out that Dragon’s Maze has plenty of future value in it as the set becomes further out of print. Yeah, you can still find Dragon’s Maze packs all over the place, but some day they’ll all dry up. This isn’t Fallen Empires, that’s for sure.
