See the Unwritten has been seeing steady gains with its success in R/G Devotion and is finally looking like a steady gainer as a solid Standard-playable mythic. Insurrection from Commander and Peregrine Drake from Planechase are seeing lots of up and down movement, but both continue to trend up. This makes sense considering how useful both cards are in the Commander format. The original Urza’s Saga printing of the Drake continues to rise, as well, but at the rate of pennies a day.
The Commander of choice that seems to like him most is Athreos, God of Passage. Despite having to sacrifice him to use his ability, Athreos allows you to get him back to your hand unless an opponent pays 3 life. Savra, Queen of the Golgari, Sheoldred, Whispering One, and Sedris the Traitor King like to have him around, too. This seems like a steady long-term gainer.
As far as foils are concerned, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx foils were bought out in droves over the past week. Copies have swelled from $15 to around $40. There’s real Modern demand for this card, especially in Modern Green Ramp which features Elves and Eldrazi. With Battle of Zendikar promising new Eldrazi, there’s a lot of hype surrounding anything that goes into a ramp deck.
Chromatic Star was the other big winner. The Star has two foil printings, 10th Edition and Time Spiral. But the 10th edition version is the one currently seeing the major gains. The Time Spiral version jumped from $6 to $11 over the course of two months. 10th edition foils have also been about $11, but have just recently jumped within the past few days to $20. These foils are somewhat rarer due to being uncommon rather than the Time Spiral common. The Star is played in those aforementioned Green Ramp decks, so that could the driving force behind this price jump.
One foil that’s been fluctuating a lot is the green/white land Razorverge Thicket. It mostly sees play in Bogles, a bit more popular deck now that the most expensive card, Daybreak Coronet, is now much more affordable due to its reprinting. But it is used in the mana-bases of several other competitive Modern decks as well. The foils have been fluctuating between $17 and $23, so it’s hard to say where this will eventually settle, perhaps around $20. For today, it’s settled at around $18.
Any cards you see on the rise in the near future, or cards that you’re finding on the cheap that you’d like to share?
