This week, there are some Alpha, Beta and Unlimited Edition cards on there - which doesn’t mean a whole lot since these ultra rare cards are always sought after. Two Arabian Nights cards that have been popping up a bunch lately: Ernham Djinn (which was reprinted in Chronicles) and Serenbid Efreet (reprinted in FTV Exiled and Revised Edition). Urza Tron lands show up here quite a bit, too, due to the fact that they are awesome. Besides these “Interesting” mainstays, there are a bunch of other cards that I would definitely like to highlight.
What intrigues me most about Animist’s Awakening is its interaction with the popular Modern-playable artifact Amulet of Vigor. The Amulet allows any lands that would otherwise enter tapped to enter untapped. So I could see a Modern or other Eternal format brew taking advantage of this card in the late game. All that being said, Awakening isn’t really seeing any Constructed play at the moment and the price movement is mostly due to hype and speculation. There is real casual demand, though, and the card works very well in Commander. I liked this card at a dollar, it’s not a terrible speculation at $2, but at $3 I feel like the card is near its ceiling unless some Constructed archetype happens to break it - which is not impossible.
I’d only buy copies for around $2 right now - that way if it spikes due to being part of a top 8 deck or something, it will be actually profitable to unload copies to buylists. It definitely has long-term potential and Landfall triggers may be enough to eventually break it. There is spike potential but it could crash to a near-bulk rare if it turns out to be a Standard dud.
Guan Yu, Sainted Warrior from Portal Three Kingdoms has seen some price movement lately, but it’s not like this is a guy you’d want as your Commander. While there are tons of good Commander cards in this very rare set, a 3/5 for 3WW that’s unblockable is not terrible, but certainly not something Commander players will be hunting down. EDHREC doesn’t find any mentions of him being played in the format at all to their knowledge - and they crawl a ton of lists. Basically, only get him if you want to own every single Horsemanship creature ever.
