Before Pro Tour Kaladesh and its 5 rounds of Standard gets underway, I want to take a quick look at how card prices look in Kaladesh at this stage of the game. There's a lot of interesting stuff to look at here.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance was hailed as the next Jace, the Mind Sculptor. Really, she's very powerful, but hasn't quite found a home in this format. Still $25 seems like the floor at the moment, as the TCGPlayer market price has been about $26 while the buylist market price has been pushing $27. There's a bit of risk still dropping $100 on a playset, but the market seems to be keeping her price up.
Likewise, Saheeli Rai still has deck builders excited, and she's not dropping much below $9 in either her market price OR buylist market price. She may still drop a bit further, but at the moment she's still a liquid card.
As awesome as Smuggler's Copter is, I haven't seen a buylist over $10 for it yet, while it's carrying a $16 market price. Since this is a 4-of in so many lists, I can't see this going much under $10 and it's still very possible Looter Scooter hits $20. I'm sure Pro Tour hype alone will do it. This card is just too good for 2 mana.
The thing that strikes me most about this set is the sheer amount of Eternal playables at the common and uncommon rarities. Hence, you're seeing high buylist prices on a lot of foils. These include Ceremonious Rejection (one of my favorite cards in the whole set), Cathartic Reunion, Voltaic Brawler, Revolutionary Rebuff, and Glint Nest Crane. There are others, but these are the top 5. These are definitely good trade targets as the set's supply peaks.
Although I don't know just how much Standard play it will be seeing, Angel of Invention is keeping a decent buylist price above $2. It just seems too fragile to be worth playing to me, but clearly vendors are trying to keep it in stock. Somebody must be buying them.
My bulk rare picks for the time being are Aetherstorm Roc and Syndicate Trafficker. The Roc seems way too good to be only a quarter, but he doesn't really have a place at the moment. Syndicate Trafficker seems like it might be sweet in an Aetherborn Tribal deck. He's aggressive as a 3/1, can gain +1/+1 counters very easily and make himself indestructible.
As far as other cards go in the set, I'd wait and see what happens with the Pro Tour before making any judgments. As for the Inventions, their prices continue to fall as the set gets opened. Most people seem happy to cash them in so more and more will end up in the hands of collectors, vendors, and eager Commander players who love to foil out their decks. So I can't really pass judgment on just how low their values will go.
What cards are you watching right now? Which would you suggest to buy, sell or hold?
My advice is always this: if you're not playing them, it's usually right to sell. If it's under $1 and could be good, it's usually right to hold. Beyond that, I would love to hear the community's thoughts on the financial state of this set. I just want to present the facts and hear what you think of them.
