Under the stars, I prowl the night.
Hunting down evil where it lies,
Lurking in the shadows of darkness...
I seek to judge them by moonlight.
Luna Starlight was, in a word, gorgeous. The feline female's face was a creamy white, along with the right side of her body. Her left side, starting below her left cheek, was jet black. The contrast was both exotic and beautiful. She'd always fancied herself a bit like her great aunt Gemini, who had in fact been black on one side of her face and tan on the other. But she was content the way she was.
Her thick, luscious violet hair was tied back in a ponytail with two side pieces tucked behind her big black ears. Luna's bright green eyes glowed brightly in the darkness, as most Felona eyes did. But hers were fiercer and more piercing than any molly's since her grandmother, Luna Dawnstar.
She had gone by the name of Danika Doby for so long, but Luna was her true name. It was Cataluna, actually – but she greatly preferred Luna.
Luna was a true Princess who had forced to play incognito since birth as the adopted child of two public servants. Now, it annoyed her to hear even her childhood friend, Perri Artemis Winters, call her by that assumed name.
She only wanted to be called Luna. It was the real name she loved and adored, her princess name.
"Hey, Dani, can I get a cool intro, too?" Perri asked.
"Stop calling me that, Artemis!" Luna insisted.
'Artemis,' as Luna often called her buddy, was a chunky, but cute silver molly. She kept her golden-blonde hair under a beanie-style hat, with only a section of her bangs sticking out of the front. The shock of hair that stuck out the back was tied into a little ponytail.
Perri's ears were quite large and erupted from her beanie quite ungracefully. Her green eyes were brighter in color than Luna's, but nowhere as intense. Her sly grin was fairly ferocious, however, and she always looked like she was ready to eat somebody.
"But that's your name, Danika!"
"No, my name is LUNA!"
"Look, Princess Starlight. I know. But if anyone..."
"Overheard us? Ha, by Mother Luna's Grace!"
"You need to go by the plan." Perri finished.
"The plan?" Luna chuckled. "We're just having a little nighttime fun, Artie!"
"As your vanguard, Luna, it is my duty to make no harm comes to milady."
"Artie, the League War is over. The Empress of the Stars has fallen. It's high time that I start actually being a princess!"
"Luna, you never know who is lurking in the shadows! And truly, this whole vigilante thing is going too far!"
"But, Artie, I thought you loved our late night prowls. Look at all the baddies we've brought to justice!"
"Well, you're right. I love playing the warrior princess. But you're not a warrior, Luna.”
“I beg to differ!” Luna scoffed.
“You're a skilled martial artist, like me. We're lucky we've made it this far!"
Truthfully, the whole vigilante thing had been going quite well. Both of them wore dark purple masks and matching jumpsuits. They were the apparel of warrior princesses of their home world in years past.
But Perri was right. Neither of them were properly trained in the arts of actually being warrior princesses in the Felona tradition. But against the foes they set out to prowl the night in search of so far, their martial arts skills were more than sufficient.
"So? We've been doing really good at this."
"Well, Luna. I've just been hearing rumors. Terrible rumors."
"Since when did you care about rumors, kid?"
"I'm hearing the Sins have returned."
"The Sins? They haven't been seen in over 2000 years. What makes you think..."
Luna paused. It hadn't occurred to her that maybe there was truth to these rumors.
In any case, the foes would become a hell of a lot tougher.
Tonight, they would get a taste of the new foes they were about to encounter.
"What in the Seven Hells was that!?" Luna asked.
There was no warning, none at all. Everything was quiet and peaceful. Then, across the street, the massive front doors of the First National Bank of Union City suddenly burst into flames. The large glass panes beside them shattered with the force of the blow that followed. Afterward, there was plenty of incoherent screaming and some other noises that Luna nor Perri expected.
"The City Bank is under attack? " Luna wondered. "And I hear... GUN SHOTS!?"
"But the use of fire arms is banned in Eterna City!" reminded Perri. "Luna, we have to bolt and go get help!"
"Fire arms don't scare me! Let's go get 'em!"
"Seriously, are you bonkers?"
"Perri, you go get help. I'll handle this!"
"Don't you mean, Artemis?"
"I'm a warrior princess, Perri. I can handle it."
"Luna, I'm sworn to protect you at all costs!"
"You're also sworn to obey your princess!"
"Yes, milady. I'll go get Officer Doby."
"Don't worry, kid. Danika Doby will be home before dawn's light!"
"Pray it not be her Grace's corpse..."
As the smoke cleared, a massive dark-green creature emerged along with several odd-looking henchmen. They were decked out in bodysuits of a dark grey. Where they should have had arms were mounted rifles
In a city where gun control laws outlawed the use of all firearms, this was more than a bit of a show-up. The green creature spread its massive dragon-like wings. As its head poked out of the smoke, it was clear that whatever it was, it certainly looked like an ancient hellkite of some kind. But the look on its face was goofy. It was a dim-witted monster, for sure.
"Seriously, Bob," said a girl teller. "We're being robbed by a Draygun!"
"One with a speech impediment no less," observed Bob.
"Jus-sss-t, give us-sss all your monies-sss, and we'll be off!"
"Thugs with guns for arms?” the girl teller said, “This is madness!"
"No, my lovely blonde babe,” the Draygun replied. “This-sss is-sss a robbery! Now don't make me as-sss-k again. Hand over the ca-sss-sh!"
"No way, silly Draygun!" the teller defied.
"My name is S-sss-am Jack. And you are an important pers-sss-on. You will make a great hos-sss-tage!"
Kristyle Cuivre was not just any bank teller. Even the dim Sam Jack was aware of this. His Beloved Father had told him that she was the daughter of a very prominent member of the Tamlar High Order, the governing body of the planet Cathara.
She didn't look like anything special, a plain, looking tan Tamlar fawn with average-looking antlers and a mess of short dirty blonde hair. She wasn't particularly tall, especially for a Tamlar. Her tail was short and stubby, well under-developed for her age.
But as Sam Jack had said, she would make an excellent hostage. "Sss-seize her," the Draygun hissed.
Luna had known about the existence of the Draygun, massive abominations that were grown from the DNA of the long-dead ancient Virtue Dragons. These creatures weren't at all virtuous, however. They blindly followed the orders of their "Beloved Father," a madman known as Ender Vale.
But Luna wasn't prepared to actually meet one in person. Once she did, she was quite sure that she could've lived without the experience.
Still, the foolishly brave Luna burst right into the bank.
"Evildoers! Be gone from this great public institution!" Luna announced. "I am the Moonchild, sworn to protect the people of my home!"
"Yes-sss, I know who you are Mis-sss-s S-sss-tarlight," Sam Jack said. "It does-sss not matter."
"Careful, Luna!" Kristyle warned.
"I do not fear you, Draygun!" Luna exclaimed. "I'll say, you're like no Draygun I've ever seen. Not that I've seen many. Or any." She sighed, suddenly realizing she was in over her head.
“Oh, Moon Princess-sss, I am no ordinary Draygun! Father will be s-sss-o pleas-sss-ed when I make you, he, he, deceas-sss-ed! S-sss-o long, la-sss-st Moon Princess-sss! May you have eight more lives-sss!"
Luna cursed. "Meow this looks really bad!"
RAT-AH-TAT-TAT! THUNK, THUNK, THUNK! RATTA-TAT RATTA-TAT-TAT RATTA-TAT! sang the machine guns of the strange men with automatic weapons for arms.
"Deadly ammo, but gravely inaccurate," Luna noticed. "Kristyle, Bob, let's get out of he..."
It was too late for Bob. He was gunned down, mortally wounded. "They... got... me... Kris... run!"
"BOBBY! NO!" Kristyle screamed in despair.
"Ex-sss-ellent work!" Sam Jack exclaimed. "We're almo-sss-t at the s-sss-afe!"
Kristyle ran up to Luna, panicking. "Oh, Bobby! You deserved so much better!"
"Come on, Kris," Luna said, grabbing her hand. "Let's bounce!"
"Going s-sss-omewhere, ladies-sss?" Sam Jack wondered. "I think not! While you weren't looking, I unleas-sss-hed my plas-sss-ma breath. Caved in the sss-ceiling. There is-sss no e-sss-cape for you now, my pretties-sss!"
"Well, then. Artemis was right," Luna conceded, shrugging. "Guess this is how it'll all end. It's OK, Kris. At least we can go out together, right?"
Kris bawled her eyes out hysterically. Luna had a smirk on her face, though. She was sure this wasn't the end.
"And now," Sam Jack declared, "I'm all warmed up to fini-sss-sh you off!"
Just then, the lights went out. This was good for Luna, with her Felona night vision. The others, including Sam Jack, were not so lucky.
"What!? Who killed the lights?" asked one of the gun men.
“Here comes the cavalry!” Luna announced.
But this sudden outage was not the work of the reinforcements that Luna expected.
"Thanks for the entrance!" called a high-pitched female voice from the ceiling. Whoever it was, she had found a way in through the hole Sam Jack had made in the ceiling to cave in the entrance.
"Who in the S-sss-even Hells-sss are you?" Sam Jack asked. He was quite annoyed that in what seemed to be his moment of victory, a shadow of a little girl was screaming at him.
"Your worst nightmare!" the little figure shouted.
"You obvious-sss-ly don't know me too well," Sam Jack muttered.
"Let's get acquainted, shall we?" the girl asked. "THUNDER CLAP!" she shouted, clapping her paws. The light of the incoming lightning storm revealed her features.
The girl was quite a sight, a slight but very pretty Azure Felona. Even behind her dark blue cowl, you could tell there was a gorgeous young molly under that disguise. Her dark midnight blue hair was tucked into two large buns at the nape of her neck. Luna guessed that undone her hair probably flowed to at least her waist.
Her sky blue eyes were bright and almost as fierce as Luna's. Luna liked her already. But she wasn't sure this newcomer could be trusted. The awe-inspiring, drop-dead gorgeous Azures were reputed to be, the envy of every non-Azure Felona girl in existence. But Azures were also reputed to the most untrustworthy of Felona.
"Get her!" Sam Jack ordered to his goons. But his gunmen were already incapacitated by the Azure newcomer's Thunder Clap attack.
"Kristyle, get down!" Luna shouted with a proud smile on her face. "It's my turn!"
Luna closed her eyes and whispered something under her breath. "I'm sorry, Mom and Dad, but it's time I use my secret power..." She then pointed towards the moon and shouted, "MOONLIGHT SPEAR!"
Sam Jack knew that Luna Starlight would likely oppose him. He was sure that she was more powerful than she looked. But a legendary attack like Moonlight Spear, something not seen since the Legendary Luna Dawnstar herself... There was no preparing for that.
Yet, there it was. The bright yellow and orange magical spear shot down through the moonlight, piercing Sam Jack right in the chest. It narrowly missed his heart and other vital organs. Still, it drew blood and hurt very badly. He had only his thick Draygun hide to thank for surviving that attack.
"Ow, that s-sss-tings-sss!" Sam Jack yelped.
A pair of red eyes emerged from the darkness. "Sam Jack. It is time to go," a loud deep voice declared. "We have what we came for!"
"Yes, father," Sam Jack conceded, feeling quite defeated. He took flight, in great pain, limping his way out of the hole in the ceiling and whooshing off into the night towards the dark side of Cathara.
"Oh, rat-sauce!" Luna shouted. "He got away!"
"He, he, coward!" the Azure mused. "We'll get him soon enough!"
Luna turned to the Azure who was actually taller than she'd first appeared in the darkness. She was actually a couple inches taller than Luna.
"That was close!" Luna admitted. "Glad you came along."
"I've been tracking Ender Vale," the Azure explained.
"Ender Vale? The mad scientist?"
"Yup. I've been tailing him for weeks. And he got away again!” The Azure slapped herself on the leg.
"Are you a League agent or something?"
"Nope. I'm the Guardian of Hope, Selina Moonbeam!"
That was when Luna noticed Selina holding something that she didn't expect to see, a strange, ornate golden sword.
"Where'd you get that sword, anyway?"
"This old thing? I inherited it from my father."
Kristyle stepped in, "Excuse me, Miss Selina. But is that the Hawkmancer?"
"As a matter of fact, I'm not really sure what it's called. I just know that it's a Soul Sword."
"I knew I'd seen it before! When I was younger...."
"Wait, aren't you Lord Cuivre's daughter, Kristyle?"
"Yes, I am! And if you are holding that Soul Sword, Miss Selina, then it means that you are the daughter of the greatest Felona hero the League of Worlds has ever seen."
"Selina, does that mean..." Luna trailed off for a moment before composing herself, "That you're Fanton Fantalica's daughter?"
"Well, er..." Selina wasn't quite sure how to respond. "Um, uh, kinda, sorta, maybe?"
Just then, the lights flicked on. A Foxy police officer walked over.
"Luna, is everything all right?" she asked. "Miss Winters came frantically searching for me and I came in through the back as fast as I could... and... oh..." She noticed the corpse of Bob.
"Poor Bob," she said with a sigh.
"Everything is under control, Officer Doby," Luna said. "We only lost Bob."
"Wait, a female Foxy police officer," Selina noticed, "So you must be...the famous Donna Doby!"
"I didn't realize I was that famous," Donna admitted with a blank expression.
"Where is Artemis, anyway?" Luna asked.
"I made sure that she stayed back at the station," Donna said firmly. "As it is, you shouldn't be here. But as you're here and you're all right, I guess we may as well just get down to business."
"I agree!" Selina said.
Donna continued to ignore Selina for some reason and kept her attention locked on Luna. "I'm puzzled. Apparently, it wasn't the money in the safe they were after."
"What was it, then? Something else in the safe?"
"That's just it, Luna. Nothing from the safe itself is actually missing. It means the attack was a diversion from something else. The safety deposit box room, however, was broken into."
"How? What could even be in there?"
"Someone slipped in and out before the security cameras could identify exactly which box was the target. Several boxes were broken into and items were taken."
"Whatever they stole couldn't be dangerous," Luna said. "Nothing dangerous goes into a safety deposit box."
"Well, to stage something that massive, then it must be at least extremely valuable." Donna finally turned to Selina. "Any thoughts, Blue?"
"Not really, Foxy," Selina said, quite annoyed at Donna's treatment of her so far. "But I know it was Ender Vale. And the name is Selina."
"Listen here, kitty!" Donna warned. "Don't you dare withhold vital information from my investigation!"
"Ahem," Selina cleared her throat, “Calm down, pup. I'm not interfering. Just here to save my sister..."
Selina turned to Luna. "Sister in arms, that is!"
"Right," Luna said flatly. "How about you and I go and help Officer Doby with her report, OK?"
"Sounds like a blast!" Selina admitted. "Let's go!"
