Will You Trade Credit Scores With Me (Craigslist Satire)

Reading the barter section of craigslist.org gave me an idea. Since all these people are trading such lovely things, I've got something to trade too. It's in okay condition but needs some touching up. If you'll trade me yours in excellent condition, I'll give you mine in slightly (read very) damaged.

Since you have such excellent credit, I'm sure you'll be able to refurbish mine in no time. It's really not that bad. It just needs a little bit of work. You obviously know what you are doing, since yours is so very high.

The one you'll get in return sure could use some handiwork. You can't yet use it to purchase anything of value, but I'm sure you'll shape it up in no time, being that you're such an expert. Besides, you probably need a break from getting all that wonderful stuff. You're probably getting a little bit spoiled and that's not good for you, according to the experts (or at least according to your mother).

You're starting to under-appreciate all those things that I've never had and I'm starting to feel like I won't ever get anything. Therefore, this arrangement would let us help each other out. By starting out where my credit is, you'll learn again to appreciate and by having your credit, I'll finally be able to get some of the things I've always needed. There's something in it for us both.

I'll appreciate it more than you'll ever know. I can promise you that. I'll take good care of it and follow your directions on how to keep it in good shape. I definitely need a lesson or two.

Once you clear mine up and make it shiny and new, we can trade back. You have my word. I never break a promise. Ask all my friends and family. I'm sure they'll vouch for me after I pay them back with your credit card.

Facebook is Supposed to be Fun (Sarcastic Memes Gone Wrong)

Perception is everything and that can easily be thrown off when people aren’t able to use all senses at once. Take Facebook, for instance. It’s supposed to be fun and generally (for me, anyway), it is. But sometimes things get twisted around and it ends being anything but.

Facial expressions, hand gestures, and tone of voice are missing in those posts. Therefore, it’s very easy to take something you see as being something else. This isn’t always a big deal. But sometimes people argue about something taken the wrong way or believe someone is going through something they aren’t.

One example relates to my sarcastic postings on Facebook. I love a good laugh or a prolific quote and I post lots of both. Sometimes they’re happy, sometimes sad, and sometimes they are quite b*tchy. I post tons of sarcastic memes in a row some days. Apparently, this has misled some people into believing I was unhappy during certain periods of time or that these posts were meant for people or situations I might be going through.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am far from unhappy. In fact, sometimes I am described as sickeningly happy. I’ve got more than one career and love it all. I have amazing children. I’ve reconnected with a really cool person I had lost touch with for a while that I’m enjoying spending time with. And I’m also engaged to a super awesome guy - the love of my life. There’s just so much in my life to make me happy right now that calling me unhappy over some funny Facebook memes is beyond hilarious.

However, that said, I do get how some people might think I’m mad or unhappy because sarcasm seems like my best friend sometimes. And it is. It’s just not that way for the reasons some are thinking. I’m just someone who loves to laugh and I often do it through sarcasm and exaggeration. Do I really feel the way those posts indicate? Of course not. Many of them are a bit overly exaggerated. That’s the point of sarcasm.

Because Facebook is also like a second life for people in some ways (or just part of the existing one), I can see how these thoughts occurred. But trust me, folks. I’m quite happy. Facebook is supposed to be fun. It’s a place where I converse with friends and family and laugh lots. I share my hopes and dreams, help others, work, and have fun.

Facebook should be fun, folks. Don’t take it so seriously all the time. Now go post another sarcastic meme I can repost and laugh about. I promise just because I shared it, it’s likely not about my own situation. Really…well, unless I say with it that’s what it’s about -- or tell you it’s about you. But that’s another post for another day.

Don’t have a meme for me to reshare? Well, go have a look at my wall and have a laugh on me. It’ll do you some good. I promise.

I Was a Frightful Child

It’s always the quiet ones, right? If you saw me in school as a kid, you may not even notice me. I was that good student always quietly concentrating on her work and getting straight A’s. But at home I was completely different and completely frightful. I’m not referring to bad behavior here. Although, I’m sure my mom has stories. I just conveniently don’t remember those. No, here I’m talking about horror.

What?! Yes, the loving, caring momtrepreneur also ventures into the dark side sometimes – at least when it comes to reading, writing, and film. I loved a good scare as a kid. Though, it took a lot to scare me and I’m not sure if anyone’s been successful at it to this day.

I’m not sure how old I was when I stumbled upon it, but “IT” was my absolute favorite book and movie. I actually still own it to this day. The VHS is quite worn but I don’t care. I still watch it when I get the urge and yes, I have succeeded in “torturing” two of my children with it already. Okay, so they were willing participants. But I did get them to watch and enjoy it. And darn if they didn’t prove they were my kids by not getting scared. Like, not at all. Not even a smidgeon.

My other two kids are afraid of clowns, which is kind of awkward since the two who did watch it are very into them and are professional clowns. Not to mention that my soon-to-be husband is just as obsessed with clowns and "IT" as me. We somehow manage to deal with that well and keep our clown stash away from the ones who shudder from it.

Back to my frightful childhood, clowns were not my only thing when it came to horror. I would watch just about any scary movie. I watched unwavering as Freddy entered the nightmares of his teenage victims (and my friends). I watched Jason stalk people, Damien follow omens, and so on.  Stephen King was my favorite author. Some of my earliest childhood writing was based in the horror genre. Yeah, I told you I was a bit frightful for  a kid.

For as far back as I can remember, I was always reading or watching something “scary”. It started with things geared toward kids of course – because I WAS a kid. However, it didn’t take long before I started sneaking things off the shelves of the adults around me and sneaking them back when I was finished. I’m not sure if I was slick or if the grownups knew what I was doing all along. I mean, who discourages a child from reading? I was reading and understanding adult-level books from a very early age.

Yes, I know none of this is technically meant for children. But as kids are often inventive, I found my way to it anyhow and I’m still very into it to this day. Obviously, adults weren’t just handing it to me. They’d of course hand me the occasional children’s variety mystery. But although I’d enjoy that too, I preferred higher level books and movies to match my reading and thinking skills. Therefore, as mentioned, someone always had some I could “borrow” for a bit and sneak back.

Were you into horror as a child?

Eight Rules My World!

7/24/2014

by Lyn Lomasi, Staff Writer

Since the day I was born, eight has ruled my world. How would I know if I was just a baby? Well, I was born on the 8th day of my birth month, for starters. Perhaps that’s where it began and perhaps it actually began much before then. Every time I turn around, the number 8 is popping up in some way.

One of the most important representations of 8 in my life involves my children. All of my girls have an 8 in their birth dates as well. This is significant, considering that none of my children were delivered “on time” and yet the girls all ended up with the 8s. One of my best friends (San over at Informed Sharing) also happens to be connected to the number 8, which doesn’t surprise me.

I’m a studier of many things, a believer in few where religions are concerned, and a seeker of truth above all. I don’t belong to any religion and often say love is my religion. However, I do like to study many of them. One of my favorite Goddesses to study is Durga, who has 108 names and is often depicted as having anywhere from 8 – 18 arms. She’s known as real, a protector, victorious, invincible, powerful, intelligent, gorgeous, mother of all, fierce, and many other things I can relate to.

The number 8 also holds strong meaning within the law of Karma, which is another study interest of mine. In numerology, the number 8 represents strength in business and finance. However, it also represents balance, wisdom, organization, leadership, efficiency, and practicality. This number is an equalizer, which makes a great deal of sense as it pertains to me. I am very strongly involved in advocating for equality.

Egyptian mythology is another interest area of mine. Ancient Egyptians considered the number 8 to represent balance and cosmic order. I’m not sure if I contain the power to balance the entire universe. Perhaps, in some way, we all do. But I am often a middleman in many situations. For Yogis, the lotus flower has 8 petals and the center of the lotus represents the axis of the Earth.

I have literally spent days on end looking up symbolism behind the number 8. Some of it I relate to and some I don’t, as many are representative of religions I don’t subscribe to. However, it is certainly interesting to research and see what does relate to me.

The main point is that 8 surrounds me and rules my world. What number, if any, rules your world?

I Love the Way it Burns!

I have a serious addiction and I like the way it burns on the way in and during the rush. Before you get scared, I’m talking about heat – you know, the kind you add to food. What the heck did you think I meant? I like my spicy and I like it HOT!!

When I say hot, I mean like inferno-type hot. I’m that person who will make her salsa from ghost peppers and use that as dip for chips – and not even flinch just a little doing so. Peppers go with every meal -- on the side and in it (if the others eating it can take it).

I’m so addicted to heat that fiery and sunny is just part of who I am. I’m that super-happy person whose always spreading positive messages and making others smile. I’ll help anyone in a heartbeat. But like a true pepper, my sarcasm will hit you just at that moment that you thought I was mild – unless you mess with my kids or family. Then, I’m another kind of fire.

Anyhow, if you eat something I prepare, you better tell me in advance if you want mild because my food is anything but. However, there’s plenty who will line up to tell you that it’s a must. I’m not allowed to come to certain get-togethers without at least one of my spicy dishes.

Cayenne, habanero, and ghost are three of my favorite peppers. You’ll rarely see me eat anything but desserts or fruits without them. I even lace my salad with my heat addiction. What? I see how you’re looking at me. But that won’t stop me. It’s darn good. Go ahead and try it.

I love the way it burns when I eat spicy food. How about you?

Childhood Memories of a Different Kind: One Hell of a Rollercoaster

I’ve always been quite the daredevil, even when I was a small child, so one would think that a story about a rollercoaster wouldn’t be so “different” for me. It’s not the rollercoaster itself which makes this particular childhood memory different than most that you hear.

When I was very young (maybe three or four), I was riding in the car with my parents.  I was in the back seat and they in the front. My mom had talked about a rollercoaster and I pictured it in my head and said “Mommy, that looks like a cool ride! I want to go on it!”

I didn’t understand at the time why my mom seemed a little bewildered when she informed me that it didn’t exist so she’d have to find me another cool one. And my poor dad was the most confused of all.

As I got older, my mom retold the events of that day and I finally understood. She had never actually discussed this ride out loud. She was thinking about it and inventing it in her head at the moment that I told her I wanted to go on it. She never said a word about it out loud. I only thought she did.

I'm a Hazard to Myself and I Like it!

I’ve made many mistakes in my life, even recently. I can be a hazard to myself at times. When screwed up things happen, there’s no one to blame but me. Shouldn’t I be depressed by now that I’ve let myself get into some of the things I have? No way! I like it. Uh, let me explain.

Mistakes are how we learn. I sometimes stumble so hard that when I fall you can hear an echo on the way down. But don’t we all? Isn’t that a part of life? Some days I want to say “Don’t Let Me Get Me” like the P!nk song says (embedded below). But in the end, just like her, I’m going to be me anyway.

I want to fall sometimes because every time I do, when I get back up, I’m so much stronger and wiser for it. Is this a license to misbehave? It may seem that way in some cases, but of course I don’t intentionally mean to do anything to hurt anyone else or myself. I’m just learning and growing like the best of them.

Sometimes I screw up so miserably I just want to crawl into a corner or under my comfy purple blankie to shield myself from the blows. But I’m not going to. I’m going to keep taking risks. I’m going to be a hazard to myself at times and I like it that way.

I’m learning. I’m growing. I’m real and I’m raw and I’m me -- and that’s all I ever want to be.

And I’m betting many of my friends are also hazards to themselves. Aren’t we all at some point?

I'm a Daredevil and a Risk-Taker

Ever met someone that will take just about any risk, soar to any height, climb any mountain, and so on? That’s me. From the time I was just a young child, I have always been fascinated with risks, dares, and other such amusements. I’m a daredevil and a risk-taker.

If I can see a benefit to a risk (even if the benefit is just fun), I’m probably taking it. This is very beneficial both in my career, as well as my personal life. In all the risks I’ve taken, I honestly haven’t regretted any of them. Apparently, I choose my risks wisely. For instance, I want to hug a lion, but of course it will be done in the proper environment and not just a random wild one. I’m risky, but not stupid.

I may enjoy the amusement parks more than my children do. Problem is, I haven’t yet found a ride that actually scares me. I just want more and more, so I keep trying. My kids love this side of me because it means more fun for them as well. From amusement parks, to difficult hikes, and other life adventures, we’re a pretty fun family. Most of our adventures are the outdoors type, so it’s great exercise.

If something in my business or personal path scares me, that means I am going to take it as a challenge and risk it. So far, it has served me very well. In fact, the site (and network) you're reading this on came from me taking a big risk. Even if there had been some falls, I would still feel the same. Why? In life, if you don’t take chances, you don’t get results.

I take many chances and reap the reward every time.

Are you a risk-taker and/or a daredevil?

But That's Not Ladylike!

Recently, the subject of cursing has come up often in my circle of friends. One common issue is that some women who curse are often made to feel guilty and told it isn't ladylike. This is not the case with just cursing. It goes even further into many other things.

To that I say "F**k someone else's definition of ladylike".

If you are a lady (or identify as one), you should make your own definition of what ladylike means to you, personally. You and only you can and should determine what your own values are. Like everything else, what ladylike means is going to be very subjective, depending on who you talk to. Why cater to someone else's belief of what it is? This is YOUR life. Ladylike should mean to you whatever it means to YOU.

As for me, yes, I say “the f word” and I say it often. In fact, it's my favorite word. Am I a lady? Last time I checked, I have all the correct parts, so I would say so. I do try to be conscious of what I say around certain people and in certain situations. But again, that's just me. What YOU choose to define as "ladylike" is up to you and you alone.

What is your definition of ladylike? Do you share my favorite word? Do you think there should be a universal definition of ladylike? Tell us in the comment section.
