I basically have two rules when it comes to social media. Share other people's stuff when it looks cool. Share your own stuff only when you really need to. That seems to work OK.
I used to think shameless self-promotion was the way to go. If you post something new, sure, go ahead. But where I've often had difficulty is adding value to my shares. Some people do out really well. But it's not many.
So I have a new third rule that pretty much over rules the first two. Only share if people will care. And by people, I mean, if just one person can use what you say, then you should.
Never have I been really for sharing pure click bait. I used to use hashtags sparingly. It's said to always use a couple. Now I use quite a few, but I don’t stuff barely relevant ones. I’m not sure if they get many more views, outside of the tags for retweet accounts. But I see it as a “best practice” so I keep doing it.
Case in point. If your tweet is only seen by 5 people and 4 people like, share or click on it, you won. But then, you can get 1000 impressions and 10 interactions. 1 of them is a hashtag retweet bot. 1 is a random like. The other 8 clicks bounce almost immediately. The higher quality interactions are what you’d rather have. More is often not actually better, especially in social media, as I’ve found.
It seems like a lot of the advice out there still suggests quantity over quality. Yet this advice also will preach quality. It's almost like they all know people are asking the same questions, so we keep coming across the same unfulfilling answers.
It's immensely frustrating how little value most content I come across actually offers when it comes to actionable advice that isn’t common sense - especially about social media. So I’m gonna stick to that third rule: share if I think they will care. Every post I write now is with that express purpose.
And always add a little value. I really need to get back to doing that.
So to recap:
- Share other people's stuff when it looks cool.
- Share your own stuff only when you really need to.
- Only share if people will care
And above all, add value. That’s where it’s at.
How do you find success on social media?. I’d love some feedback from personal experiences!
