My life is full of topics. Even a “boring” day will have at least one thing I could write about. But I can’t always spin up something positive and helpful from it. At one tie, I thought I’d mastered that art, as evidenced by my many posts on Motivational Friends.
My motivational / inspirational work was all self-driven, my way of trying to brighten others’ days. However, it was also to lift my own spirits, as well. But when you find the positive energy waning, you have to take a step back and take care of yourself.
Sometimes, the usual tricks don’t work to get the writer's gears grinding again. Unfortunately, as a writer, getting stuck just happens. It's just in the nature of the occupation. Sometimes, “just write” doesn’t work. Sometimes all you can really do is step away for a bit.
The best thing to do? Go spend time with your loved ones. This way, you can recharge. While you’re at it, go read something. It doesn’t need to be a full-length novel or anything. Get some new thoughts and ideas brewing in your mind. After all, reading is the best fuel for writing!
So if you ever see your favorite writers simply not post for awhile, bear with them. Writing can be so much harder than it looks to many who aren’t writers themselves. Sometimes to make writing sustainable, you have to take a break to reload.
As a writer, just don’t give up. Still try and sit down when you can to scribble something, but don’t force the writing. Let the words come, even if they are nonsense. Heck, sometimes I just doodle, and that works, too! Writing is so much like the gym. When you don’t go for awhile, it’s so much harder to get back where you were.
But as far as posting? Don’t be afraid to let people know that you need a break sometimes. The truly supportive readers will understand that you’re only human.
Don’t give up on your writing dreams. Just know when you hit a rut and need some recreation. Don’t keep digging a hole. You’ll know when you’re ready to write again!
