Buck Showalter wins his third Manager of the Year award. Obviously, he deserved it. It's just funny that he has won the award every ten years. He won it in 1994 with the Yankees and in 2004 with the Texas Rangers. So he needs to stick around to win it in 2024 too.
Cubs and Nationals discuss Jordan Zimmermann in trade talks? If I were the Nationals, I wouldn't trade him, BUT it depends on what the Cubs would be willing to part with... but for a one-year rental? That doesn't make sense for the Cubs unless they would then sign him to an extension immediately. Interesting trade rumor for sure.
Pitcher Eric Stults elects free agency after Padres outrighted him to AAA. While Stults results looked good for the Padres last year, his peripherals aren't nearly as good. Plus, opposing batters hit .283/.328/.450 against him. That's not pretty. Also, his 3-10 win loss record on the road with a 4.50 ERA isn't so great, either. However, oddly enough, his strikeout to walk ratio was much better on the road. It's very likely Stults gets a back-end rotation job somewhere. But he's no great loss for the Padres, most likely.
Tigers re-sign Victor Martinez to 4-year deal worth $68 million. Hmm, $68 million over four years for Victor Martinez. Now, keep in mind, I love the guy. He had an epically good year last year, and his BABIP (batting average on balls in play was about normal for him.) BUT I'm not crazy about paying a guy $17 million per for his age 36, 37, 38, and 39 seasons. Can he repeat last year's number? Possibly. But not each one of those years. He's still a great hitter, but if his knees go, this could end up being an albatross and a half by year three. Overspending here, and the Tigers are going to have a monstrous payroll this year... and they're already subtracting Scherzer and Torii Hunter.
Clayton Kershaw is the unanimous choice for the 2014 National League Cy Young Award. Duh. That one was obvious. He received all 30 first-place votes.
Corey Kluber edges out Felix Hernandez for the 2014 American League Cy Young Award. Kluber had an amazing year, and deserves the award. But Felix was in some ways superior, especially in ERA. This should have been awarded to both of them, but alas, that's not possible with this award.
