The Top Pampered Champs (Poetry)

“The Top Pampered Champs” is a silly poem based on a dream I had about a book review series with the same title.

March 20, 2019

In these hallowed spaces we celebrate the whimsical

In these eminent pages we recognize the nonsensical

With our ever darkening world we need more than ever

To recognize truly exceptional and wonderful endeavors

We call the best of the best our top pampered champs.

Their work carefully scrutinized under high powered Scrutinization Lamps

Our champion subjects range from the lost and untold stories of Zeus

To super silly songs and really just about anything by Dr Seuss

Unfinished Verses (Poetry)

"Unfinished Verses" is a poem about wondering what to do with poetry that remains unfinished  and the endless possibility that exists in pieces that aren’t yet complete.

Pondering unfinished verses
Quite unsure of how to proceed
Dizzy beyond useful purpose
These strange words are all she can read

The conclusion's open-ended
She's already planted a seed
The words already plentiful

They'll grow into something beautiful

A binding reason for all she writes
That's all she ever really needs

"Echoes" is a free verse poem that considers how memories may just be echoes that are sometimes not worth remembering.

June 11, 2018

Can you, do you hear them?

In your dreams, do you hear?
The echoes
Of voices you once knew?

Walking through
Dull and faded landscapes
Populated by ghosts
Of persons you once loved

Are mem'ries just echoes?
Or do they still live on?

How much is worth keeping?
How much left forgotten?

Is it just passing time
Or do we just forget?
Either way,
The echoes still remain

Do you, can you hear them?

“Image Imperfect” is a short poem about how sweet things are often not what they appear to be.

7-14-2018

Snapshot of a dream
Sweet like berries in cream
Captured the emotion
Undying devotion
But things as they seem
Look close, they will come
Apart at the seams...

“A Poem a Day” is a poem that sets a challenge of writing a poem a day, which would certainly be a great accomplishment.

6-7-2018

A poem a day
A foundation I will lay
Do the work today
The dues I must pay
To do poetry justice
To say I wrote this
Some words are harmless
But others are infectious

What Makes Me Come Alive? (Poetry)

“What Makes Me Come Alive?” is a poem about always pursuing what makes you happy and fulfilled, no matter what it takes.

May 2, 2018

What will make me come alive?
How will I burn forever bright?
With this eternal overdrive
Bathing in Creation's light

Knowing wrong from right
Means nothing in this
Birth of day from nights
Of innocent bliss

Pursuing a happiness
Undeterred in its method
Create at any and all costs
Even if you end up dead

The Wallace Monument from afar (requires magnification !)
"Afar" is a short poem from late April 2017.

4-28-2017

"Afar"

To be here with you
A gift I don’t deserve
All these many years
From afar I observed

A hero worship
Can be a curse
Forgot who you are
Living life in reverse

Aren’t we all but mortal
Living under linear constraints

Trying to find a special portal
Where we can dream without restraints

Out of Tune - Free Verse Poetry from 2005

Hiding Moon
“Out of Tune” was meant to be the headline tune of an “EP” of mine that I never actually came back to working on. As it is, it’s not a complete song, but it’s fine to publish as poetry. I’ve written so much free verse poetry that I figured I may as well share it. Like some others I’ve finally gotten around to putting out there, "Out of Tune" is made up of drafted lyrics that have not yet been put to song. This one is from 2005.

7-15-2005

Here alone in this room
Feels more like I'm trapped
Buried within an emotional tomb
Completely out of tune
With everything and it's
No doubt coming soon
The realization I'm needing
Something that will
With the rhythm and beat
Bring me back into tune

What happened to the moon
It's pitch black outside
Well, no doubt pretty soon
It'll even be this dark
On the longest day at noon
The light gone from my world
Hopelessly out of tune
All the once exciting
Has left me so bored

Came across an old "EP" of mine that I never got around to actually doing anything with. While I never got around to actually making these lyrics into something, I figure they make decent free verse poetry. Like some others I've been finally posting, "Get Out (While You Still Can)" is adapted from drafted lyrics that have not yet been put to song. This one is from 2005.

get out of here
while you still can
no reason to make
yet another stand
overcome the fear
that has so long
trapped you
paralyzed in here

things aren't as
hopeless as they
once appear
there is truth
behind the lies
and deceit unclear
but you gotta get
a little further away
before you can make
sense of the difference
between night and day
both seem the same
when you're alone

get out of here
while you still can
no reason to comply
to popular demand
break out and free
yourself from the sty
open your eyes
stare at the sky
find it within yourself
to do what you never
thought you'd try

get out of here
while you still can

Have I just gone mental
Is the strain just too much
Is life just accidental
Is this feigned sanity
Nothing but a crutch

March on to the beat
Deafened by a droning hum
Taboo to break formation
Don't know when to stop
Marching to the ceaseless drum

As prayers go unheard
As wise thoughts are shunned

Broken Verse - Traces of You

10/26/2016

by Mireya Esperanza
Picture
6-12-2007

Wicked places
Ugly faces
Yet everywhere I look
I’ve seen traces of you
I could write a book
Outlining what you took
My heart, my soul, my pride
I’ve locked your memory up deep inside

Familiar faces
Bring back happy places
I could’ve run the races
But I just walked on the side
No one in which to confide

My deepest secret, this divide
What tears me apart inside
Are these traces of you

Memories of your face
And ongoing fruitlessly

To be locked in your embrace
I just can’t provide
The reasons that I hide
As my love and hate collide
Just can’t let you see that I’ve cried
Over traces of you

A Little Peaceful Rest (Poetry)

My lovely friend, Helen
Dug this little poem up today and thought I'd share it with you all. It's called "A  Little Peaceful Rest" and I wrote it way back in my first summer after graduating high school. Let me know what you all think!
“A Little Peaceful Rest”

June 17, 2005

My head fills up with good thoughts
That I just can’t refuse
Then in comes bad imagery
That I just really can’t use
To force this child’s heart
To grow up’s too much to lose

What’s inside my head
Isn’t always the best
No place for birds to nest
It’s what keeps me from
Some simple peaceful rest

I sympathize, I empathize
In places my heart shouldn’t be
I’m so off course
But I’ve been worse
Far more depressed before
As life continues to be
A frighteningly dreadful bore
I know when I look at someone
There’s a whole lot more
Than you’d like to admit, hun

What’s inside my head
Isn’t always the best
No place for birds to nest
It’s what keeps me from
Some simple peaceful rest

If only this brain would
Shut down for a while
Believe me If I could
I’d ignore the bad things
But I’m too smart for that
These horrible rings
I hear souls crying out
The world just ain’t happy
And since my heart is open
The pain of the world
As much as it shouldn’t
Keeps me from some
Peaceful, peaceful rest

Our Dream Dance

2/13/2016

By Crystal S. Kauffman, Contributing Writer
Poem Dedicated to JD

Picture
©Unknown
Missing your arms and touch tonight,
Our song floods my ears and entices my mind.
I close my eyes and picture a time when,
We had it all, because we had each other.

I never thought I would be feeling so alone without you,
Dancing together in my dreams and kissing your sweet lips.
Your love changed me in ways that you will never know,
Do you remember the way we met and the nights we shared?

I never felt so in love with a person before I met you,
Remind me of the way, we lost ourselves in each other.
I need you now to just smile and say something clever,
However, you are a dream now that I meet each night.

We were so close to finally having what we want,
Being in love with you took my breath away.
I gave you my heart so many years ago,
I force a smile when my heart is shattering.

How do I reach out to a memory that has faded?
Do I ever enter your thoughts and your mind?
The pain shows me that you were mine once,
My heart hasn’t healed and there is nothing I can do.

Praying and crying won’t bring you back to me,
It has been so long, since we ignited that everlasting fire.
All the feelings we felt and the nights we spent together.
Came to an abrupt end and that is what truly hurts the most.

Never Say Never (Poetry)

1/15/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

I grow concerned for

The good in your heart

Never say never, whatever

You say, no matter

I'm right here forever

What is that look

In your eyes I see

Envy, the grief,

That knife in your side...

Not time for repeating

The same old mistakes

Never say never to

Taking my rightful place

I know the joy and the fun

We used to share in this space

Between you and I, don't you lie

And say it won't be again

Never say never

I'll be here forever

Watching you die

As the pain grows inside

I know that you hurt

You're wounded I see

But that can't mean

You'll take no help from me

I saw as that dagger

Stuck right in your side

Might as well been

Through your chest

Cause your soul

It has died...

Never say never

Yes I'll be here forever

Watching you cry

As you curl up and die

I know that you're hurt

You're bleeding I see

But that can't mean

You won't take

Any help from me

Please take my hand

I'll try to help you stand

But you just refuse

For you, I'm no use

Never say never

I'll sit here forever

Waiting for your call

Even if it never comes

Again, at all...

Emerald Eyes (Poetry)

1/15/2015

Picture
by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

Emerald eyes, you turned my blue skies

To black emptiness, the ground to scarlet red

Cut all my heartstrings, left me for dead

Once, twice fooled by your vile disguise

Emerald eyes, you caught me in your vice

Crushed my skull, raped my mind

Used to say that I was such a find

Never knew affection had such a high price

In your emerald city so far away

Emerald eyes baby you beckon me

To come your way, join your misery

But I won’t give in, not again, today

The Method (Poetry)

1/15/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

Spent so long in academic pursuits

Hoping somehow I’d become astute

In all the mysteries of our wondrous world

But I’m all alone, confused in the cold

I’ve taught myself how to make some sound

In the comfort of this shade that I’ve found

Under dim beams of moonlight I come around

No length of darkness keeps me in and down

So truly this is the method of my madness

A little hope squeezed between the sadness

I may not say too much with my simple words

And what’s there to quote but my simple chords?

Do I dwell on stale memories, are they all that I have

Of a past best forgotten, it all leaves me so sad

I’m a wreck, it’s true, but it can’t end up all bad

There’s madness in my method, so I’ve just gone mad

Enchanted (Poetry)

1/15/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

You enchanted me without reason

I just can’t win in any season

But your spell helps me live on

Gave me something to ride on

Utter despair and disrepair

But it’s something, albeit unfair

Sleepless, I wish I were numb

I wish I were deaf and dumb

The world inside is so cold

I stumble around, feeling so old

Without anything left in to believe

My lungs are weak and I wheeze

It’s getting much harder to breathe

You cursed me as stupid and small

When I could have given you all…

Sweet Possibility (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

I taste the possibility of her kiss

Even though realistically I'm denied this

The sweet thought of her sight

What I'm thinking just isn't right

All I want is to be sincere

Tell her this truth without fear

Feel the sweet possibility of her touch

In my lonely reality my heart's crushed

But her smile still salves my wounds

Soon forever she'll be gone so soon

All I need is to be sincere

Handle this bitter truth with...

No fear, without a tear

No tears, be sincere

Feel my heart sink

In the ocean of dreams

Daydreaming at the call of her voice

I've never heard a more lovely noise

Wrapped in it all of my joys

But I'll never have it, no...

I just need to be sincere

Handle this bitter truth with

No fear, without a tear

No tears, be sincere

Feel my heart sink

In the ocean of dreams

I'll forever miss her dearly

Sign of the Times (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff
Throttle it up, and strap yourself in
Revel in the bliss of perpetual sin
There you go again, dying within
Sign of the times, we're all worn thin

Sex it up, leave it all on the floor
Sell your soul for a little sugar to-go
Sign of the times, we're feeling low
There you go again, let yourself go

In the morning you're gone again
After another night of sweet blissful sin
Gone by the wayside, I'm here alone again
Waiting on good times that won't come again

Hercules (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff
9-29-10

Our hero has fallen

Authored failures of epic proportions

Who will bow before him now?

All the bleeding hearts have stopped

So grand so strong was he

Our hero or so he seemed

His heroic low rider ways

Beckoned for a higher calling?

Oh so now were he a god

Were he a savoir of the masses

Why then did our heavenly lord

Grant him none of His graces?

The corruption has spread like cancer

We’ve elected ourselves a king

Our nation can’t collapse much faster

Shadows of the truth beckon us to sing

Our hero has fallen

Take him away

Our hero was false

He has lead us astray

Our hero is a fool

We’ve all lost our way

Our hero is no more

Today is our darkest day

For a new hero, we can only pray

He was never our Hercules

Never could win us the day

Bring us a new hero, please…

Dust (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff
Covering this old desk

Are papers yellowed and old

What was written here?

So very long ago

The dust is thick

And I can feel it

Soft at my fingertips

This very place

Such an empty space

So full of manuscripts

And random scraps

What was written here?

This is what is left

Of a broken man's

Imagination and dreams

These are the scribblings

Of a trembling hand

Why couldn't he let go

Of the things he couldn't

Change as hard as he'd try

Why did he have to die?

All that's left of him

Lies here under this dust

Dried out pens

And worn out pencils

His only tools

He knew how to use

He couldn't use

Much else but his

Highly literate mind

The dust it settled

Carefully has preserved

The words he wrote

He rarely ever spoke

Except thru the written

The Words he toiled over

This is all, these words

Are all that's left

Of a man that let

Every cog in him rust

Everyone lied to him

There was no one

That he could trust

To pass his wisdom on to

Hoping for a future

Someone with a clue

To find and learn

From his mistakes

You can write all your life

Try to find the truth

There are just some things

That just can't be rewritten

Things just are what they are

His greatest mistake was

Trying to rewrite the past

The best we can do ourselves

Is to write a future for us

A future that can last

Birth of a Prophet (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff
Something magic happened in your bedroom

A wonder child will indeed be born soon

Do you realize what your actions are worth

The importance of what your love has given birth

He'll for too long only know his name

And the loving arms from which he came

But he'll know too well he doesn't belong

And struggle mightily to find solace in song

The nature of things will corrupt him

The flesh will tempt and mock him

But no earthly temptation will stop it

For whatever may come, he will be a prophet

Rearrange This (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

I thought, if I could rearrange this life

I could make me the one you wanted

I thought, if I could make you believe this

I could make you the one I needed

Rearrange this, what the hell have I been

Doing with all my time inside this go round

Hell, it's not so merry but it's going around

Trying to rearrange this mess I'm living in

I felt, if I could rearrange this life

I could make you the one I needed

I wonder, if I could make me believe it

I could make me the one you wanted

Rearrange this, where the hell have I been

Drowning in my pity inside this go-round

Hey, it's not so merry but I'm going down

Trying to rearrange this mess I'm living in

Rearrange this life, I'm the only one I needed

Rearrange this, too high a price for what I wanted

Rearrange this life, I'm not really what you wanted

Rearrange myself, it's all I've ever really needed

When We Go (Poetry)

1/14/2015

by Richard Rowell, Write W.A.V.E. Media Staff

If you give a little, babe

Then you know I’ll give a lot

If you turn me topsy-turvy

I may get dizzy, but I won’t stop

When we go, we won’t together

I know it’s true, but I won’t like this

The way we part, tragically

Was there any point to it?

Psychotic, infection, this affection

Was it ever truly meant to be?

When we go, it won’t be forever

Part of you will stick with me

When we go, I won’t be together

I know it can’t be true, I won’t take this

The way we’ve gone, so painfully

Part of me will be lost, I’ll be much less

If I give a little more, babe

You’ll give not much more

Even if it’s a little bit too much

It won’t be enough anymore

When we go, it won’t be together

When we go, it won’t be forever

Together, no, never, this heart will break

Apart we must go, forever be, for my sake
