Baseball Cards - 2017 Bowman Jose De Leon Rookie Card (RC)

Picture
When the Tampa Bay Rays traded Logan Forsythe to the L.A. Dodgers for pitcher Jose De Leon, they were hoping to get this promising young right-hander that had three straight strong seasons in the Dodgers farm system. True, DeLeon’s 2016 MLB debut hadn’t gone well. But the Rays were optimistic. Forsythe would not be as good for the 2017 Dodgers as he was for the Rays in 2015 and 2016, but still provided value with his batting eye and glove-work.

De Leon, on the other hand, basically had a lost season with arm troubles. When he was on the mound, he wasn’t very good. However, none of the injuries were particularly serious. Still, De Leon’s stock is pretty low right now. His strikeout stuff is still there, but his control was definitely hampered by injuries. However, a healthy DeLeon is a valuable arm that the Rays will no doubt be happy to have on the staff, in the bullpen or the rotation.

Understandably, De Leon rookie cards aren’t hot commodities right now. But picking up this Bowman rookie card for a handful of credits on Listia was well worth the risk that he may never become a productive MLB pitcher. Still, I think the Rays have a guy who has plenty of upside. There’s really nothing to lose here, for them or for my card collection.

Baseball Cards - 1994 Collector's Choice #131 Rickey Henderson

Rickey Henderson was a heck of a baseball player. He played for a million years for a million different teams. I’ve always been a fan of his play, and as he’s a Baseball Hall of Famer, I’ll collect Rickey Henderson cards. Even though this may only be a base card, this 1994 Collector’s Choice card was well worth picking up on Listia.

In 1993, Henderson played for both the Oakland A’s and the Blue Jays. He was traded by the A’s to the Jays for pitcher Steve Karsay and a player to be named later. Henderson was awful for the Jays, and after becoming a free agent returned to Oakland. So, this card shows him during his short and not so productive stint with the Jays. The upside is that he won a World Series ring with Toronto. Fortunately for Rickey, he’d go on to play until 2003 and was fairly productive for a few more seasons.

While this Upper Deck base card isn’t really close to a hallmark card for Rickey, it’s a card that I’m not sure that I have. Even if I did, the price I paid in Listia credits was very low, and you can’t ever go wrong with Hall of Famers.

Boston Red Sox Personal Card Collection - 2017 Topps Mookie Betts Silver Slugger Insert #SS15

I picked up this Mookie Betts Silver Slugger Insert card from 2017 Topps for a mere $0.25. While this card is probably not worth more than $1 right now, it's a great card for my long-term Boston Red Sox personal collection. But there are things that made me like this card in particular.

One, Betts is a star player, and currently one of the best hitters in the American League. He's a player worth collecting. As I've taken a long break from card collecting, this is actually my first Betts card.

Secondly, this is such a tiny investment. While I typically only buy rookie cards and numbered cards, there are short prints, inserts, and even base cards that I'll pick up if the price is right. I do that on Listia regularly, but if it's a dollar or less, and it's a card that has been selling on eBay, I'm willing to take a stab.

Lastly, this is a nice looking card. Aesthetics do matter after all. While awards cards may not have quite the appeal that they did years ago, I always like cards that serve as a reminder of key moments in a player's career. Betts rookie cards are definitely among my top targets, but to me, this is a must have Mookie Betts card.

Football Cards - 2017 Panini Prestige D’onta Foreman Rookie Card

While I mostly collect baseball cards, I'm always game for good football, basketball and even hockey cards if they're worth a shot. I didn't know much about D’onta Foreman of the Texans,  but there is interest in this card, so for the price I figured what the heck.

In his first few games, the rookie running back Foreman has been used as a backup to Lamar Miller. With around 4 yards a carry, I'd say he's off to a good start. Also, Miller hasn't been blowing him away, either. So there's potential for Foreman to get more snaps.

Overall, I think is a good rookie card to pick up now. While I'm sure I'll flip this card at a later date I'm happy to wait and see how Foreman’s 2017 season pans out.

Boston Red Sox Cards - 2017 Topps Update Postseason Celebration Insert #PC21 2007 Boston Red Sox

The 2017 Boston Red Sox may not have made it very far into the playoffs, but it is a great time to remember the 2007 Red Sox World Series run. Here’s a nice little insert card that I picked up on Listia celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Red Sox World Series win against the Colorado Rockies. As inserts go, this is a good one.

There are numbered parallels of this card, but they don’t seem to sell well on eBay. However, the regular versions such as this one do sell for $2 or more. I’m more than happy with getting this card for my Boston Red Sox personal collection.

Baseball Cards - 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball #53 Jace Peterson

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
Recently, I picked up a Dee Gordon card from the 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen on Listia. I ended up picking up another one from the same user. This time it was a Jace Peterson. There is actually an error version of this card with a missing backplate. Although this is not that card, I wanted to share that knowledge anyway so you all can keep a look out.

The reason that I wanted this particular card is not just that I like the design of this set, which I do. Actually, I see Jace Peterson as a bounce-back candidate in 2018. This guy was a good prospect not that long ago. He has shown some ability at the Major League level, too, but hasn’t put everything together just yet. There is promise, though, as he showed he can be an above-average hitter at triple-A, and he has shown the ability to take a walk in the majors, too. If he can show the defense that he first did in the Majors in 2015 and be a league-average hitter, Peterson could be a big part of the Braves future.

Here’s to hoping Peterson has a much better career going forward. For me, it’s just another Atlanta Braves card of a player I have hope for.

Basketball Cards - 2017 Panini National Convention #BK5 Kyrie Irving

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
Kyrie Irving wanted a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. And he got his wish. It wasn’t to the New York Knicks as he may have hoped. Instead, he was traded to the Boston Celtics for star Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a couple of draft picks. Thomas sustained a bad hip injury before the 2017-18 season even started, which let to the Celtics sending an extra draft pick as compensation. Meanwhile, Isaiah Thomas has gotten off to a great start for the Celtics, scoring 80 points in his first four games. This feat puts him in some elite company, including Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and ironically, Isaiah Thomas. So far, it’s looked like a good trade.

The funny thing is, when I first saw this card for auction on Listia, I didn’t even know he’d been traded to the Celtics! I’ve had a lot going on recently, so I wasn’t keeping track of NBA news. I did enjoy watching Irving’s play in the 2016-2017 NBA Finals earlier this year. So I was happy to bid on a card of a star player. But as someone who typically only collects Celtics or former Celtics (Shaq, for example), this came as a nice surprise. I won it for a fair amount of credits, too.

This particular card is a National Convention insert from the 2017 Panini Set. It retails for $1.50 or more, so it was a really nice add for my collection. While I wasn’t intending it to be a part of my Celtics basketball card collection, since he’s now a Celtic, it’s a nice pickup. It’s no Shaq rookie card, but I’m more than happy to have it.

Crazy Expensive Carson Wentz Rookie Cards!

Picture
Philadelphia Eagles Rookie Quarterback Carson Wentz has really been tearing it up in 2017. Unsurprisingly, there's a lot of demand for Carson Wentz rookie cards. Tonight, there's one such rookie card commanding nearly $2,000 on eBay. It's a 2016 Panini Contenders Cracked Ice Rookie Card with Auto. It's #6 of only 24 copies out there. This particular copy is also graded 9.5 by Beckett with a 10 graded autograph. You can see the listing on eBay here.

Picture
If you want to own a somewhat more affordable version of this card, there's also a Panini Contenders Rookie Card with Auto that's numbered to 25. It doesn't have the fancy Cracked Ice parallel and isn't graded. Still, on eBay it's been bid up to $500! Basically, if it's a Wentz RC with auto, you can expect a lot of bids!

Talk about a "boom or bust" investment! Right now, Wentz's stock is most definitely booming!

Baseball Cards - 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen #122 Dee Gordon

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
I won this Dee Gordon baseball card on Listia for a low amount of Listia credits. This is card #122 of the 2017 Topps Gypsy Queen set.  At the time, I was also bidding on Yuliesky Gurriel and Dallas Keuchel cards from the same set, but they went for more credits than I wanted to spend on them. So, Dee Gordon was a consolation prize.

Gordon had a breakout year for the Miami Marlins in 2015 before an injury-riddled season in 2016. He rebounded a good deal in 2017, hitting over .300 and scoring over 100 runs. He also stole 60 bases. He seems like a  good   candidate for an even better year in 2018.

Overall, I like the design of these Gypsy Queen cards. So, I don't mind getting even a base card of a  lesser known  player when it's for relatively pennies. Here's to a great 2018 season and beyond for Dee Gordon!

1990 Leaf Frank Thomas #300 Rookie Card -  Baseball Cards from 1990 Worth Money

10/23/2017

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
Being a popular Baseball Hall of Fame player, Frank Thomas rookie cards have become quite popular. There's the 1990 Topps Frank Thomas No Name error baseball card that's been known to sell for quite a bit. But the Topps #1 Draft Pick card is not the most valuable Frank Thomas rookie card. There's the 1990 Leaf #300 Frank Thomas RC. Not only is it a nice looking card, but you can put some money in the bank if you happen to pay Beckett Media or PSA to grade it!

One BGS 10 (Pristine) Leaf Frank Thomas Rookie Card snatched $706 in August of 2017. As one of the more popular Hall of Famers in recent years, it's not surprising that this card fetched a high price. But, it's not a price that you'd expect for a 1990 baseball card that is simply a base card! But, the pose is great and the overall card design is clean and simple. It's very attractive to collectors.

That auction just shows how highly sought after 10's are from collected. Another 9.5 also graded by Beckett only fetched about $110 by PWCC auctions on eBay. It was still well worth getting the card graded. That's no number to sneeze at, but it's no $700! Likewise, a PSA 10 of the same card fetched only $77 by PWCC. In 2018,  $70 to $80 was the going price for PSA 10 copies of this card, with plenty of eBay sales at that price point.

But in late 2018 and early 2019, PSA 10 Frank Thomas rookie cards started eclipsing the $100 mark in auctions on a regular basis. Considering there are a ton of PSA 10 copies out there (3035 PSA 10 examples as of 2/9/2019), that's quite a jump in price. Of course, his demand makes sense, as he hit over 500 home runs and hit over a .300 batting average in his career (.301) - both milestones that card collectors appreciate.

In PSA 9 graded condition, however, there are over 9200 (!) PSA 9 copies out there. Because of the sheer volume available on the market you're lucky to get $25 for a PSA 9 copy. At about $10 to $20 a card, depending on how many cards you submit at once, grading isn't cheap. But, grading IS worth it for this particular 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas card if you can get it in a PSA 10. Due to essentially breaking even (or worse) on getting a PSA 9 back instead of a PSA 10, collectors are willing to pay a substantial premium for an already slabbed PSA 10 example.

So, what if you don't want to put the time and money into grading? Well, the great news is you can find this card raw under $5 in mint condition! Even better, you can find the entire 1990 Leaf set for $20 or less. The  set also has a Sammy Sosa rookie card that collectors are still buying today. If you do decide to grade the 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas, since there's a discount on grading more cards at once, there are other cards to consider submitting:

  • #12 Roger Clemens
  • #21 Nolan Ryan (HOF)
  • #25 Greg Maddux (HOF)
  • #63 Mark McGwire
  • #91 Barry Bonds
  • #98 Ryne Sandburg (HOF)
  • #125 Bo Jackson
  • #154 Tony Gwynn (HOF)
  • #160 Rickey Henderson (HOF)
  • #178 George Brett (HOF)
  • #180 Joey (Albert) Belle RC
  • #197 Cal Ripken Jr. (HOF)
  • #237 John Olerud RC
  • #245 Ken Griffey Jr.
  • #265 Nolan Ryan (No Hit King) HOF
  • #297 David Justice RC

Many of these cards can fetch $10 or more as graded PSA 10 examples. There are a few other Hall of Famers in the set, such as Eddie Murray, as well.

Frank Thomas continues to be a beloved, charismatic former ballplayer long after his Hall of Fame induction in 2014. While you may not be able to build a retirement fund around his most popular rookie card, it definitely is looking like a strong investment in any baseball card collection. So, thanks, Frank Thomas, for making the 1990 Leaf baseball set worth collecting!

1990 Topps Frank Thomas No Name Rookie Card #414 - Baseball Cards from 1990 Worth Money

10/23/2017

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
There are not many baseball cards from the early 1990's that are worthy much money. However, one card that certainly is worth money is the 1990 Topps Frank Thomas #414 with a missing name on the front! A Beckett Graded copy of this card actually sold on eBay for $7200! However, there have been other graded copies that have sold for as low as $150. Ungraded, you're looking at closer to $15. Goes to show the value in paying to have cards graded!

What about a regular, ungraded 1990 Topps #414? Frank Thomas is a Hall-of-Famer. The "Big Hurt" is one of the more recognizable recently retired players. Well, you'd be lucky to get $2 for a regular copy. There are just so many of these in the wild. But the no-name error card is DEFINITELY worth having graded if you happen to come across one. Also, authenticated signed copies of this card (even the corrected version) are worth $40 or more. In any case, this Frank Thomas Rookie Card is a good card to have from the 1990's.

Red Sox Baseball Card Spotlight: 1967 Topps #7 Don McMahon

10/21/2017

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Picture
Don McMahon may not be a household name, but he was a pretty good baseball relief pitcher for almost two decades. He actually pitched in the Major Leagues until he was 44 years old! This 1967 Topps #7 baseball card isn't exceptionally rare, but it's a nice piece of history.

Back in 1966, the Red Sox traded once all-star reliever Dick Radatz for McMahon. As it turned out, Radatz was washed up and was out of baseball a couple years later. McMahon was good in 1966 for the Red Sox, but wasn't stellar for them in 1967, essentially being replacement level. In that year, the team that would end up being the "Impossible Dream Team" traded McMahon and minor leaguer Rob Snow for infielder Jerry Adair. To the Sox's credit, they got a lot of value out of Adair, although he'd be dreadful in 1968.

Meanwhile, after being traded to the White Sox, McMahon pitched very well for the rest of 1967 and 1968 for the White Sox. He'd move to the Tigers, where he was adequate, and pitched several more seasons for the San Francisco Giants, including  one of his best years in 1970 at age 40.  McMahon would still have several seasons left in him, although he was never quite that good again.

So, this was a pretty good trade for the Red Sox, and it's a good card for vintage Red Sox baseball card collectors. Excellent condition copies can be found for $2 or less. While McMahon might not be remembered much today, he was definitely an above-average relief pitcher for a very long time. Not only was he good for the Red Sox for a bit, but he again contributed by acquiring a very useful infielder for the 1967 team. As of 2018, Don McMahon is still with us, too.

Here's to what was a great, and pretty underrated, career!

What is a Danny Tartabull Baseball Card Worth? - Baseball Cards Worth Money

10/19/2017

by  R.A. Rowell; Co-Owner of Intent-sive Nature & the Brand Shamans network
Danny Tartabull was a fairly valuable slugger for a number of teams in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He is also the son of former MLB player, Jose Tartabull. For both of these reasons, Tartabull was a popular target for baseball card collectors. Despite playing in more than 138 games in a season only twice, he put up some very nice numbers on offense. He had only one truly bad season in 1995, and a monster season in 1991.

Although he began with Seattle, the majority of his career was spent with the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees. Because he wasn’t great on defense, he was primarily a designated hitter throughout his career, which limited his overall value. Nevertheless, Danny put together a solid career worthy of attention from baseball card collectors.

Unlike some popular minor star players from the mid-80’s to mid-90’s, Danny Tartabull has some baseball cards that are actually worth good money. This is because his career was ending around the time when short-print subsets were becoming more popular. This means that there are a good number of Danny Tartabull cards which actually carry some decent price tags.
Picture
There are several rookie cards out there for Danny Tartabull, but the only one worth more than $1 is the 1985 Fleer Prospects #647 card that he shares with the Oakland A’s Steve Kiefer. While Kiefer didn’t have much of a career, this is the rarest full print-run rookie card of Tartabull.

One of the best Danny Tartabull baseball cards is the 1997 Flair Showcase Legacy Collection Row 2 #94 Danny Tartabull numbered to only 100 copies! While I wouldn’t call it the “holy grail” of Danny Tartabull baseball cards, it’s close.

There is also the 1993 Topps Finest Refractor #167, which is a very shiny nice looking card. The non-refractor version is worth about a tenth of the refractor version, but is still a great Danny Tartabull baseball card.
Some other rare Danny Tartabull baseball cards worth collecting:

  • 1982 TCMA Minor League #472 - great pre-rookie card!
  • 1994 Upper Deck SP Die-Cut #200 - back when die-cut cards were a thing…
  • 1995 Select Artist Proof Baseball Card #9
  • 1996 Pinnacle Aficionado Artist's Proof #33
  • 1997 Pacific Silver #63 Danny Tartabull
  • 1997 Donruss Gold Press Proofs #97 Danny Tartabull
  • 2012 Leaf Memories - 1990 Leaf Buy Back - Silver Foil #99 - numbered to only 20 copies!

Also, many Danny Tartabull autographed cards can fetch $20 or more.

Jody Reed was a second baseman / shortstop who spent 11 years in Major League Baseball, most of them for the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the L.A. Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and Detroit Tigers. While he didn’t hit for much power, his strong batting eye gave him a career on-base percentage of .349 and his .270 batting average was respectable, as well. He was also perfectly fine on defense.

While he was hardly a star player, in 1989 and 1990, he was actually an above-average hitter, thanks mostly to his on-base skills. With the Red Sox being a high-profile team, Jody Reed got plenty of attention. So it’s understandable that there are plenty of people who collected Jody Reed baseball cards. So, what is a Jody Reed baseball card worth today?

Actually, there are some Jody Reed baseball cards worth collecting. While the base set cards aren’t worth much, there are plenty of short-print sets that feature Jody Reed, thanks to his couple of strong years for the Red Sox. As a fairly popular player, Jody Reed autographed cards are often worth in the neighborhood of $5-20. Also, a PSA 10 Jody Reed from 1991 Topps Desert Storm fetched $140 on eBay in November 2018!

Here are some other rare versions of Jody Reed baseball cards you should be on the lookout for:

  • 1990 Topps Big - #167 Jody Reed
  • 1991 Topps Baseball Operation Desert Storm #247 Jody Reed
  • 1993 Stadium Club First Day Issue #612 Jody Reed
  • 1994 Stadium Club First Day Issue #642 Jody Reed
  • 1994 Stadium Club First Day Issue #13 Jody Reed
  • 1994 Finest Refractors #346 Jody Reed
  • 1996 Donruss Press Proofs #336 Jody Reed
  • 1996 Collector's Choice Gold Signature #298 Jody Reed

What is a Teddy Higuera Baseball Card Worth? - Baseball Cards Worth Money

Picture
Teddy Higuera was a left-handed starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers for several years between 1985 and 1994. However, he wasn’t very effective after 1990 due to injuries. Still, he was so good early on in his career that he racked up over 30 WAR (Wins Above Replacement). Hardcore Milwaukee Brewers fans are more than happy to collect baseball cards from all across his career.

Unfortunately, most Teddy Higuera cards are only worth dimes. However, there are a few that are worth over a dollar. The best Teddy Higuera baseball card is the 2016 Topps Archives Fan Favorites Teddy Higuera Autograph #FFA-TH. They sell on eBay for a few dollars. The most valuable Teddy Higuera card is the 1987 Sportflics #11. While these 3D cards look extremely dated now, they are still very collectible.

Other Teddy Higuera baseball cards worth collecting:

  • 1991 Studio Previews #6 Teddy Higuera
  • 1993 Pacific Spanish Prism Inserts #16
  • 1994 Upper Deck Collectors Choice Gold Signature #451

Are there are players from your favorite team that you like to collect? Let us know and we can let you know if there are some valuable baseball cards of those players that you may not have known about.

What is a Glenn Braggs Baseball Card Worth? - Baseball Cards Worth Money

Picture
Glenn Braggs was a decent baseball player for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds between 1987 and 1992. He also spent 4 years playing in Japan for the Nippon Professional League. But he is best remembered for his time in Cincinnati in 1990, helping the Reds to win the World Series. While he didn’t blow anyone away, Braggs was a league-average hitter with some speed and probably was undervalued at the time. So, what is a Glenn Braggs baseball card worth?

As you might expect from a non-star player, Glenn Braggs baseball cards are typically worth only what your run-of-the-mill base set card would sell for, perhaps $1 on eBay. However, there are a couple of Glenn Braggs baseball cards worth Bragging about. (Pun totally intended.)

The one Glenn Braggs baseball card worth the most is the 1991 Topps Operation Desert Storm #444. The price on this card widely varies from anywhere from $3 to over $10 for PSA-graded copies. That is already a sought-after set, but this card by itself is worth owning.

Other Glenn Braggs cards worth considering for your baseball card collection:

1988 Score - Rack Pack Young Superstars 2 #2 - This card is worth a couple of bucks due to being in a small set. Many players in this set turned out to be useful contributors but the best of the set are easily Barry Bonds, Barry Larkin, Fred McGriff, and Roger Clemens.

1994 Miller Brewing Milwaukee Brewers 25 Year Commemorative - [Base] #GLBR - Great card for any Milwaukee Brewers or Miller Brewing fan.

1991 Reds Kahn's #15 Glenn Braggs - Part of a team set of which Barry Larkin is definitely the keeper.

Any other Glenn Braggs baseball cards you’ve seen that you’d like to share?
